B2B Explanation

B2B means business-to-business that is, it refers to the exchange of products, information and services between different businesses and not between a business and consumers. B2B communication happens in industries like E-commerce. It is also known as e-biz. It is predicted that B2B revenue will soon far exceed business-to-consumers (B2C) revenue.

There are different types of B2B websites as follows:

  • Company websites: Many companys site’s target audiences are other companies and their employees. These company websites serve as the entrance to an exclusive extranet and are available only to customers or registered site users. Many companies also sell directly from their sites, effectively e-tailing to other businesses.
  • Product supply and procurement exchanges: In many cases, company purchasing agents can shop for supplies from vendors, request proposals or bid to make a purchase at a desired price. These are referred to as e-procurement sites, serving a range of industries focusing on a niche market.
  • Specialized or vertical industry portals:  These portals provide a "sub-web" of information along with product listings, discussion groups, etc.  These sites have a more comprehensive purpose than procurement sites. In a rare case, they also support trade.
  • Brokering sites: These sites act as links between providers and customers who need their specific services.
  • Information sites:  These are infomediaries and provide information about a particular industry to its companies and their employees.
  • Sites that sell services for building B2B websites are also B2B enterprises. This includes site-building tools and templates, transaction software and database and methodologies.

Models for B2B sites are evolving and many of them fall into more than one of these categories.
