Kubernetes Definition

Kubernetes, the Google-designed software, is an open-source system that automatically deploys, scales, and operates on Linux based operating-system-level-virtualization also known as containers applications. The kernel of the container operating system allows the existence of multiple, remote user-space. This user-space is used to store the copies of a program to be accessed by the CPU to run at high speed, in the virtual machine for memory protection.

It was released in the year 2014 and was written in ‘GO’ programming language. It is essentially cluster management software and was donated to Cloud Native Computing Foundation. A group of a clustered host of Linux containers spanning across public, private, or hybrid cloud can be easily and methodically managed with the help of Kubernetes as it removes many of the manual process used for deploying and scaling of the container application.

Instructions for Using Kubernetes

Kubernetes API objects are used to interact directly or with the help of a command-line interface ‘kubect1’ with a cluster. This object helps in generating a format of the cluster that is tailored by the users according to their need. The basic objects include:

  • Pods—the smallest unit that a user creates or deploys, service— a set of pods that work as a tire or multi-tire,

  • Volumeit solves problems during containers crash and helps in sharing file between containers in a pod.

  • Namespaceis used to divide cluster resources between multiple users. It also uses other high-level abstractions known as controllers, namely ReplicaSet, Deployment, StatefulSet, DaemonSet, and Job.

It is built on the basic objects and has added functionality and better features.

  • Kubernetes Control is used to achieve the customized state of the cluster as directed by the users. It keeps a record of all the kubernetes objects and runs control loops continuously to manage the state of those objects. It carries out all the instructions and implements the required applications and schedules them to the cluster node according to the reports to achieve the customized state implied by the user. Kubernetes Master is a collection of processes that run on a single node in the cluster and has the main responsibility to maintain the customized state. It can replicate itself as per its need. Kubernetes Nodes are the machines that run the application and cloud workflows.

Advantages of Kubernetes

Large scale production applications span over multiple containers and kuberenete has the capability to deploy, scale and manage containers that maintain high workload. Kubernetes supports the transition from a host-centric to a container-centric infrastructure. Its Platform-as-a-service possesses the flexibility of Infrastructure-as-a-service and enables portability across infrastructure providers. It is extensible and can be used with plugs, modular, hooks, etc., portable as it can be used in any form of cloud, and self-healing as it can auto-deploy, auto-replicate, auto-restart, etc.

Why do we need Kubernetes?

The workflow that is specific to the making and deploying of an application can efficiently accelerate the developer velocity with Kubernetes.  It provides a platform to build an ecosystem with tools and other components for the developer, to make application deployment, scaling, and management easier. Nevertheless, Kubernetes as platform-as-a-service based still preserves the choice of the users where ever it is important. It supports and an extremely large variety of workload that supports stateless, stateful and data-processing workloads. It does not discriminate or limits the number of applications that can run on a container. If an application can run on a container then it is capable to run on kubernetes.
