Machine to machine is the direct communication between any machine over a network, be it through a wired network or a wireless one. Historically, machine to machine was used to  enable communication through signals, quite similar to a morse code. After the age of computing, machine to machine communication has become much more significant.

            An example of machine to machine communication these days can be the home automation system, which enables control of appliances through mobile devices. The devices will communicate with each other over the Wi-Fi network, giving individuals control over all the internet connected appliances in the house. In businesses and industries, machine to machine communication is now an essential part of the process. In manufacturing plants, it is essential for the manufacturing robots to communicate with each other and with the main hub that controls the whole process. Communication will run both ways, such as generation of error reports during cases such as systems malfunctions.

            Machine to machine communication enables greater efficiency amongst the myriad of devices communicating with each other in businesses. M2M enhances cost-effectiveness, increases productivity and even perform maintenance without the need to physically examine the system.
