A network security audit is a data security software tool. It deals with the process of systematic evaluation of the security of all the information system of any company. An audit which is efficient assesses the security of the information system's physical configuration and environment. It also assesses software, information handling processes, and user practices.

Importance of Network Security Audits and Assessment

Security audits are sometimes used to determine regulatory compliance and to determine how organizations should deal with their information and protect them. In the wake of today's ever increasing compliance awareness the use of network security audits are inevitable. It is a mean by which the ongoing level of performance of any organization's networks can be monitored. Security audits can monitor network security and it can allow for investigations.

It can also be efficient in pointing out the chosen trends and specific security incidents. In all modern computing platforms several kinds of network security audit features exists. Some of them are security event logs and journals of data base of all the activities.

The network security audit actually looks after information of two broad categories.  The static data comes first and this includes system definitions, protocols used, password rules, firewall definitions, etc. Next, the audit deals with the activities that have taken place.  Some other common functions are access to databases, transfer of files, and keeping a track on user activity in the network security audit.
