The public switched telephone network (PSTN) is the collection of world’s wired phone systems, both commercial and government-owned, over which landline telephone calls can be made. PSTN aggregates interconnected voice-oriented public networks, which are operated by national, regional, or local telephone operators, providing infrastructure and services for public telecommunication.
Telephones are able to communicate with each other in PSTN since they are interconnected using switching centers; this includes interconnection between fiber optic cables, microwave transmission links, communications satellites, telephone lines and undersea telephone cables. Contrary to cellular communication, PSTN limits the ability of making and receiving calls only within the reach of the wires, it is still being used for home and office purposes.
